Top Tips To Cope with a Hangover Top Tips To Cope with a Hangover

I am not sure how much this applies to the rest of the world but tonight, Hogmanay, is a major party night in Scotland. All over the country tomorrow morning, people (may or may not include me) will be crawling out of their beds, whimpering as they close the blinds in an effort to shut out the light.
Now there are precautions that we could take tonight to protect ourselves against a hangover. Things like eating fatty food to line the intestine, avoiding dark drinks, alternating alcohol with soft drinks and downing pints of water before bed would all help if only we were sensible enough to follow them. After one drink though I suspect, I, like many others, will be refusing food, declaring "Eatin's Cheatin'" and hammering the spiced rum and coke. I suspect that the only thing I will be downing before bed will be another drink...
It will be all smiles and kisses and congratulations and laughter
I open my eyes
And feel
THE FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortunately though I have been in this predicament before and over the years have picked up a fair few tips and tricks to ease the pain.
The first thing to do when you open your eyes is drink a large glass of water with a couple of painkillers. Do not drink Coffee. I repeat

Caffeine dehydrates you and what you need is to rehydrate your system as dehydration is what causes many of the hangover symptoms.
Paracetamol is the best painkiller to take as Ibuprofen and Aspirin are likely to upset an already delicate stomach.
Next go back to sleep for an hour or two. When you wake up the painkillers will have kicked in, you will be less dehydrated and the fatigue should have lifted a little.
Next it is time for food. It is important to eat as your blood sugar levels will be all over the place. If you can't face food at all, try Bouillon or Miso soup. Its easy for a fragile stomach to digest and is a good source of the vitamins and minerals needed to top up depleted resources. If you can face it though, a more substantial breakfast can do you a lot of good. Bacon and Eggs is an ideal breakfast. The protein in the bacon breaks down to amino acids which replaces those lost from the brain, while the eggs contain a different amino acid which counteracts one the main causes of a hangover. Oddly enough, burnt toast is a great accompaniment to the fry up as carbon is actually used by hospitals to treat alcohol poisoning.
To wash it all down, drink orange juice as it is said that fructose helps metabolise alcohol more quickly.

Once breakfast is over, plaster on a nourishing face pack - alcohol causes serious dehydration and the skin is the first place to really show it.
Resist the temptation to try "The Hair Of The Dog". It is much better to sip on an isotonic drink such as Lucozade instead.

So there it is, my top tips for the treatment of a hangover. I hope some of this helps when tomorrow morning, I am lying on the couch crying into my Lucozade and swearing off alcohol forever.....

Until New Years night that is!!

5. One of the first blogs I followed was ETCLLYLMRS. I can't really tell you what I love so much about it. Her photographs are just beautiful and her reviews always answer ever question I have. Plus she is so pretty and her cute is  so cute that it is just a delight to read.

My Top 10 Beauty Products of 2013 My Top 10 Beauty Products of 2013

So given the date, I thought it would be fun to round up for you my top ten products of the year.

1. Popcorn Lip Scrub by Lush . Everyone should own one of these amazing lip scrubs from Lush. It tastes amazing and in just seconds leaves your lips ready for anything.......

2. The Intensive 7 Days Ultra-Replenishing Lotion by Garnier must be the bargain of the year at just £2.09 from Boots. It is the perfect body lotion really, very moisturising and quickly absorbed. Love it.

3. Again Boots had the best price for The Lasting Perfection Concealer from Collection. At £4.19 ask no questions, just go buy one. It has superb coverage without any cakeyness (is that even a word?), even on my older skin. Great product.

4.I know its cheating to have 5 palettes here but I just couldn't choose between them. The MUA palettes are stonking value at an average of £4 for 12 great quality eyeshadows. They are available from Boots, Superdrug or for the complete range, check out MUA online.

5. and 6. So its no surprise to anyone that Mac Lipsticks will always appear in my top ten but this year I had two clear favourite shades. First up was the very appropriately named So Chaud, a true and very flattering red on my very warm toned skin but shows up quite orange on cooler tones. My second favourite is Rebel a beautiful pinky plum berry shade perfect for Autumn Winter. Both are available at all Mac counters and online but as I have a Debenhams Beauty card and they often run sales and points offers, I generally buy my Mac products there.

7. Is another Mac product the 217 brush. I love this eyeshadow blending brush cos it makes my make up look professionally applied. Enough said.

8. I know you must all be sick of hearing me rant on and on about the Clinique Chubby Stick but I genuinely adore this product. Its long lasting, moisturising on the lips and has great colour payoff. Perfect product. Try one!

9. I adore Nars Sheer Glow, my holy grail foundation, fab coverage but looks like natural glowing skin, perfect. I tend to buy it from ASOS when they have their money off days.

10. Last but not least is my beloved Mac Palette. I love choosing from all the beautiful shades Mac stock to create my perfect palette. As before I buy mainly from Debenhams for the points lol.

So those were my favourite products from 2013, I would love to hear what yours were. I wonder what products we will all be loving next year. Can't wait to buy and try them all, lol. If you want your very own Mac Palette with 4 of your favourite shades, enter my giveaway -
and good luck x

New Year New Me New Year New Me

Okay so back on the wagon for me. After all the excesses of Christmas, I am ready to start eating well again and to get back into the habit of daily exercising. As always when faced with a challenge, I head straight for the internet and as well as my old favourite, MyFitnessPal, which I love for tracking my food and exercise, I found another site that I thought was a lot of fun. ModelMyDiet is a clever little website that really helps with motivation. How it works is you enter your vital statistics and it makes virtual models of how you are now and how you will look at your target weight.

Not very pretty huh? I look about 90!!!! But the image of me at my target weight is so much better I think. How about that for motivation? I thought it was really clever.

The really clever bit is that as you lose weight, you update your stats and your wee simulated self updates too, showing you your progress.

In addition to the virtual self, there is also a ticker to plot progress and you can see mine st the start of the post. I thought the site was great fun and an excellent motivational tool.
Losing weight isn't brain science, we all know what we should be eating and that exercise should be part of our daily lives. It is doing it consistently that is difficult. So for me motivational tools like that and websites like MyFitnessPal really can make all the difference.

If you have found any online tools or any other tips or tricks that you think would help me then please share.

And if you like me are trying to get a bit healthier this New Year, I would love to hear from you. Maybe we could help each other along.

A Christmas Gift From MAC A Christmas Gift From MAC

Merry Christmas to all of my lovely followers, over 500 of you now which is just unbelievable.

It has been just over two months since LippyLikes was born. Who would have thought on 15 October when I wrote those few lines about my favourite Tom Ford perfume, that this was the start of something, which just over ten weeks later, would have had such a major impact on my life. It would be no exaggeration to say that this little blog has become a real passion of mine and I am so grateful that I decided to give this blogging lark a try. So after that first post, my wee blog has grown remarkably quickly and the number astonish me.

  • 504 followers on bloglovin
  • 139 Google+ followers
  • 159 GFC followers
  • 942 followers on twitter
  • 4703 Pageviews last month
  • Almost 10,000 Pageviews overall.

Although I am hugely motivated to keep building this little blog of mine, for the next week or two, I am going to put all thoughts of my next target to one side and do something to thank all of my followers for their support and encouragement, advice and friendship.

And what better way to do it, especially at Christmas than with a thank you gift?

As my regular readers know I am currently building my first Mac palette and having so much fun with it.

The quality of Mac eyeshadows and the colour range available are in my opinion second to none.

As you can see I have already put together quite a variety of different shades and can put together a huge number of looks.
Amongst my favourites already are Cranberry, Amberlights and Humid.

So what better gift to thank all of my lovely followers than your very own Mac Quad Palette filled with shadows of your choice.

I really, really wish I could buy you all one but sadly my budget doesn't allow so the fairest way is a Rafflecopter draw.
Good luck to everyone and don't forget, the lucky winner chooses their four favourite Mac shadows which they then receive in a lovely Mac Quad Palette.
Thank you all and MERRY CHRISTMAS x

Jolly Holly Christmas Tag Jolly Holly Christmas Tag

The lovely Luchessa from BeautyExpression by Luchessa kindly invited me on Twitter to take part in this tag and being a HUGE fan of Christmas, I jumped at the chance. I hope you enjoy it.

1. Do you start your Christmas shopping on Black Friday or wait until the last-minute?
Every year I decide that this will be the year I get organised. So every year I start buying presents in September. I then feel smug and relax until mid December when I realise how much I still need to do and join the throngs of last minute shoppers yet again.

2. If you could be in any Christmas movie what would it be?
I would DEFOS be a toymaker in Elf.

3. Which do you like better: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
I love Christmas Day but for me Christmas Eve is just so special. The feeling of excitement and anticipation everywhere you go. I absolutely love it.

4. When does your family put up your Christmas tree and who decorates it?
The Christmas tree always goes up the first week in December and we all help with the decorations.

5. White lights or coloured lights?
We have a green tree with gold twinkly lights – pretty.

6. Are you guilty of peeking at your presents or do you like the surprise?
I find it very hard to resist peeking but for me the surprise is the best bit so I always force myself to resist.

7. Would you rather live in a gingerbread house or in Santa’s Workshop?
Oh what a lovely question. I love gingerbread so the house is very appealing but the Elves live in the workshop, right? And they can make anything cos they're magic, right? Even lipstick, right? So no choice really!

8. Tell us your Christmas Eve traditions!
Oh last minute shopping then the family get together, we get a Christmas Eve present, usually new jammies and then we all curl up on the couch and watch Christmas movies with a glass of Mulled Wine.
9. If you could be under the mistletoe with anyone who would it be?
My lovely hubbie of course.

10. What tops your tree?
A golden star.

11. Can you name the 12 days of Christmas?
They have names? No, sorry, no idea!!!

12. Have you ever gone Christmas carolling?
Never, its not really something that happens in Glasgow.

13. Do you countdown to Christmas? If so, how many days are left?
Course I do. I have a Santa with a day counter and every day I change it. Today it reads - 02. YAY!!!!

14. What are some foods and treats you can count on having every holiday season?
Mulled wine is what I look forward to, it is so delish. Oh and the cheeseboard is always epic!

15. How has Christmas kept its magic for you as you’ve grown older?
To be honest I love Christmas every bit as much now as when I was younger. The sense of unity, everyone excited about buying gifts that will make their loved ones happy. I will never get too old to love it.

I am not going to tag anyone in particular. Its Christmas. Anyone who wants to do it can do. I hope you all enjoyed reading it and all have a wonderful Christmas. God bless.

Christmas Nails Christmas Nails

Whichever kind colleague drew my name in my works Secret Santa knew me very well.
Take a look!

Oh isn't it just the most delightful parcel?

Gorgeous packaging.

Lancome Vernis In Love

Purple Fiction Shade 185N

Isn't it glorious. A little bottle of luxury. Launched in September, this is one of three Vernis In Love nail colours designed to compliment Lancome's L'Absolu Desir lipsticks. Unusually each of the polishes has the same black base but when you look closely two of them have a hint of colour. The three shades available are Black Sepia, which is a rich ebony black, Grey Lumiere which is black with a charcoal grey tone and mine is Purple Fiction which is a blackened maroon.
Achingly chic, these polishes are exactly the colour you would expect to see gracing the fingertips of a Parisienne Femme.
I have this on my nails right now but in the poor winter light, they simply look black. I can tell you though that this polish applies as smoothly as you would expect from this brand and the resultant high gloss manicure lasted almost a week without a single chip.
Best of all, I felt as chic and sexy as that Paris Madame wearing it!
Oh la la!!!!

LancĂ´me Vernis In Love, £12.50 each here.

SPECSPOST - The New Way to Buy Glasses SPECSPOST - The New Way to Buy Glasses

As lots of you know, I am a regular user of Twitter and love to enter all the competitions advertised there.
Recently I was lucky enough to be chosen as a winner by a Company known as SPECSPOST, with the prize being a new pair of glasses.
SpecsPost is a young, fast growing on line prescription eyeglasses retailer, based in Manchester, England. They are the official partner to The Daily Mail and have many thousands of happy customers both in England and increasingly throughout the world.

The company aim to charge less for their eye wear products and they certainly have plenty of eyeglasses frames and lenses to choose from. I was really impressed by the high fashion appearance of their glasses despite being at really great prices.

What they offer is a new way of purchasing specs, with a really easy to use guide on how to buy glasses on line.  Personally I found them super easy to communicate with. They are active on line and will respond to tweets, emails or Facebook messages, which must make it really simple to resolve any issues which might arise.

For me there were none. I emailed a copy of my prescription and within days my prize arrived.

As you can see the specs arrive in the usual protective case with a lint free cleaning cloth inside.

The quality seemed great to me, no different from what you would expect from any High Street, Optician.

What I really loved though, was the styling. Specspost has a huge variety of glasses from Designer to Vintage or Retro. I really can't imagine anyone not finding specs to suit.

Talking about glasses to suit, if you are struggling to decide which glasses to choose, you can pay a small deposit and have up to three pairs sent to you to try on in the comfort of your own home.

What do you think?

I really can't finish this post without commenting on the prices on offer. With glasses from just £10.00 and most prescription lenses coming free with the frames, Specspost offers unbeatable quality.
I truly cannot imagine ever buying Specs anywhere else again.
Can't wait to choose my next pair.

Avon Ultra Colour Lip Crayons Avon Ultra Colour Lip Crayons

So continuing with my Avon reviews, today I thought I would let you know how I found the Ultra Colour Lip Crayons.

Those of you who follow my blog will know that I am a HUGE fan of chubby sticks. If you haven't read it already, you can check out my review of them here.

Christmas is an expensive time for all of us though so when I saw these Crayons on the Avon website at a far more affordable price, I thought it would be rude not to at least give them a try.

Avon offer a choice of six shades - all beautifully named. I really struggled to choose between them.
The options were Showstopper Pink, Carefree Coral, Notice Me Nude, Risque Rose, Fresh Fuscia or Reddy For Me.

Never one to do things by halves, I actually ordered not one but two Crayons, the aptly named Showstopper Pink and Carefree Coral.

The packaging is very similar to Clinique's. They might be described as crayons, but there is no need to sharpen these beauties, simply twist the bottom and the product is ready to use.
The formula feels really creamy and applies very smoothly and evenly on the lips without highlighting any imperfections or dry patches you might have.

As you can see the colour payoff is fantastic, both shades look vibrant with a high shine but without the dreaded sticky feel of gloss.

I have to be honest, I don't think these crayons lasted quite as long as the Chubby Stick. I wore the pink one today and after about 4 hours (and lunch), I definitely needed to reapply. Four hours though? I think that's really good for this kind of product.

So now for the big question - how does the Avon crayon compare to the Clinique one for value.
Well that's where the Avon product wins hands down. The Clinique Chubby Stick cost me a whopping £17, while the Avon Ultra Colour Crayon costs just £8.50. What a bargain?

Better still, if you go to the Avon website here they are offering all sorts of special offers and freebies, plus you can check out the weird, yet wonderful Mega Effects Mascara that I reviewed here.

I have really been loving my Avon purchases this month. Have you tried any products from Avon recently? If so, make sure you leave a comment. I would love to know what your favourites are!

Mac Eyeshadow Palette - Newest Additions Mac Eyeshadow Palette - Newest Additions

My first choice is Amber Lights! Love love love this colour. It is highly pigmented and very hard wearing. It blends beautifully and with almost no fallout. It is a frost but not glittery at all so very wearable. It can be worn in day time alone or with soft brown in the crease or amped up for night with a deeper crease for a smoked out look or another bright for a striking look. Could not recommend more highly. A real must own!

Next choice for my palette was this season's must have, Cranberry. This is also a Frost shade and its easy to see why its such a bloggers favourite. The pigmentation is fabulous but its actually much more wearable than it looks in the pan. I love it on its own or in the outer v. It really works with my green eyes but I actually think it would work with pretty much any colour eyes. If you are hesitating about purchasing this one, just don't! Trust me, its gorgeous!

The final colour I picked was Folie. This is a satin shade but looks pretty matte on me. The payoff is not as strong as with the other two but it builds up really well. Colour wise it is a warm toned brown, almost burgundy on my NC35 skintone and it really compliments my green eyes. I love this in the crease worn with almost anything lol. A real workhorse in my palette.

So that is how my palette is looking now. I use one or more colours from it every single day and can't wait to add the next three. Maybe I will take advantage of the Debenham's sale here to get a bargain, yay, always love a bargain, so enabling lol!

So I have six more slots to fill. What eyeshadow shades would you think should fill those empty slots? I can't wait to see what you all recommend!
